Watch Colima Volcano Erupt in Mexico

The Colima volcano has been teasing a major eruption for years—the most recent activity was back in June 2016.

Lava has sporadically been spotted flowing down its slopes since November 2014, but the last large-scale eruption dates back to 1913.

Villages at the base of the volcano have been evacuated, and the smoke can be seen from Mexico City, some 300 miles west of the eruption site.

This particular volcano may seem familiar if you caught footage of the volcano erupting while simultaneously being struck by lightning—something that's surprisingly common given the positive charge of the material being expelled from the eruption.
